Bristol Chiropractor Dr Leah Remeika-Dugan Answers some Questions about Chiropractic:

Can a person who had back surgery see a chiropractor?

Many times, the answer is yes.  Many people who have had spinal or disc surgery often discover a return of their same back problems months or years later, often due to the formation of scar tissue from the surgery. Problems happen so frequently that the condition has a special name, “Failed Back Surgery Syndrome”. Chiropractic may help prevent future surgeries.

I already exercise and get massage, so do I still need Chiropractic?

Chiropractic deals with the function of the nervous system and the structure of the spine. Because the nervous system controls everything in your body, it is vital that it functions without interference.

Massage can relax the muscles and improve circulation, but if the nerves are irritated, the muscles will tighten up again. Chiropractic addresses the underlying cause (irritated nerves) not only the resultant muscle tightness/spasm.

Exercise is a vital part of any wellness program, but it can never be a substitute for excellent chiropractic care.

Can you tell on your own if you need a chiropractic adjustment?

Generally, no. A subluxation is like a dental cavity, you may have one with no symptoms for a long time. For this reason, a regular spinal checkup for during apparent wellness is advisable.

Can chiropractic prevent back surgery?

In many cases, yes.  But don’t wait until then, visit a chiropractor today.  It is easier to stay well than to get well.

The bones of the spine house and protect your very life line: spinal cord and related nerve roots (extensions of your spinal cord that divide and re-divide to form your nerve network).

When one or more bones of the spine (vertebrae) lose their proper relationship with the adjacent vertebrae, instead of protecting the nerves, they now interfere biomechanically with the communication between the brain and all your chemical producing organs and glands. This situation is called a chiropractic subluxation (misalignment).

Simply put, in your experience with Chiropractic, you should have at least heard your Chiropractor mention the terminology Subluxation, a chiropractic misalignment.  If not, ask next time you are getting adjusted!

The definition is fairly simple.  A chiropractic subluxation / misalignment is a joint that has lost its proper motion and is essentially stuck.  And on a biomechanical scale – the effects of a chiropractic subluxation can be detrimental to your body’s normal nervous system function.  [ for more information - google search my article by googling my name "Dr Leah Remeika Dugan" and my article "Rebooting Your Nervous System with Chiropractic" ]
